Australian Gaming And Sporting Round Up, by Greg Tingle - 3rd July 2010

Readers, gamblers and sports nuts, here's your weekly Aussie gambling and sporting round up as Media Man and Gambling911 circumnavigate the southern hemisphere. UFC weekend, Aussie NRL betting scandal update, Aussie casino wars continue and more...

Crown Casino VS Star City Casino "War" With Politics, Legal...

'Sin City' Sydney: Star City has collected only $212,000 in unclaimed winnings since it opened in 1995, while Melbourne rival Crown Casino collects about that amount every calender year!

This huge difference prompted an accusation that the Star Casino may be "pocketing" much of the unclaimed winnings it collects and a call for the Casino, Liquor and Gaming Control Authority to introduce enhanced auditing of the system used.

In NSW, unclaimed winnings include pokies credits left in machines and jackpots that are downloaded to a machine but not collected! They also include what are known as "sleeper" bets on gaming tables left unclaimed.

Greens Party MP, Lee Rhiannon, quizzed the Minister for Gaming and Racing, Kevin Greene...MP Green advised Parliament in June that the fashion Star City deals with unclaimed winnings is not subject to any regulation.

He did state re unclaimed poker machine jackpot "is dispersed back to the jackpot pool if the patron cannot be identified".

Unclaimed pokies credits are deposited into an unclaimed winnings account, while "sleeper" bets are returned to the float of the gaming table.

Victorian legislation dictates that unclaimed winnings at Crown are paid to the Treasury.

Star City estimates it has collected $212,000 in unclaimed winnings in its 15 years, Crown recently revealed it had collected about $1 million in unclaimed winnings in the past 5 years ($200,000 annually).

Ms Rhiannon remarks "Either Melbourne casino patrons are far more forgetful than those in Sydney, or Star City Casino is secretly pocketing … unclaimed winnings."

Spokesman for Star, Peter Grimshaw, rejected the allegation. He said that while he could not comment on Crown's figure findings, he pointed out that it was a much larger casino with 2500 poker machines, compared with 1500 at Star City. Grimshaw said money found on the floor and credits left on a machine or in a coin tray were deposited into an "unclaimed moneys account" which was then dispersed to registered charities. He did not provide a figure for how much has been given to charity, but advised the account now holds about $22,000 grand.

Ms Rhiannon said the retention of some of the unclaimed money such as "sleeper bets" and poker machine jackpots by Star City was "unjustified". She called on the government to introduce the Victorian system of returning the money to the Treasurer.

"This major discrepancy underlines the need for more stringent auditing and a law change to ensure this money does not go to Tabcorp but goes into consolidated revenue," she said.

Mr Grimshaw said any such change was "a matter for Parliament. Star City has a policy of giving all found money to registered charities, so they would miss out from any move to return the funds to consolidated revenue." A spokesman for Mr Greene referred inquiries about changing the rules to the Treasurer, Eric Roozendaal, who is in China on government business. Mr Grimshaw said the gaming control authority could review Star City's unclaimed winnings "at any time". Charities, you might want to contact the casino and the gaming control authority to give them your thoughts and 2 cents worth.

Aussie NRL Sports Betting Scandal Update...

We know you wanted an update... A multi month probe betting plunges on Melbourne to win the "wooden spoon" (loosing team) before the club was stripped of all its comp points has failed to identify any punters with connections to the game or News Limited, the owners of the Storm and 50% stakeholders in the National Rugby League. The case remains open and chief exec David Gallop and the NRL remain keen to learn who was responsible for a number of bets placed in Melbourne and Brisbane that attracted suspicion and worldwide headlines because of the time and manner they were put on. Racing NSW chief steward Ray Murrihy yesterday handed the NRL his report into the alleged betting fix mania but did not name anyone who had backed the Storm to finish last that may have had inside knowledge of the penalties imposed on the club for rorting the salary cap. Allegations that the punishment given to the Storm had been pre-determined before Melbourne chairman Rob Moodie and board member Craig Watts flew to Sydney on 22nd April for meetings with News Limited and the NRL over allegations of salary cap rorts form part of the legal case by the club's four independent directors against the penalties. A series of wagers that stood to win huge amounts if the then competition leaders ran last were laid with Australian betting agencies either late on the night of Wednesday, April 21st or early the next day...before the NRL announced that Melbourne had been stripped of the 2007 and 2009 premierships and forced to play this season for no competition points for "cheating" the salary cap. Among them is a mystery punter who walked into a Melbourne hotel at 9.30pm the night before the penalties were handed down and placed five successive cash bets totalling $200 on the Storm to claim the wooden spoon. At odds of a massive 200-1, the punter holds winning tickets worth $40,000. More than 400 bets are believed to have been laid with Tabcorp, TAB Sportsbet and 14 corporate bookmakers around Australia in the 48 hours leading up to the Storm being stripped of all competition points. Next thing odds fell to 20-1 before suspicions of a sting prompted betting agencies to suspend the wooden spoon market.

Report Findings...

No evidence that any player or official as defined by the NRL rules placed a bet or had an interest in a bet on Melbourne Storm to win the 'wooden spoon' and/or 'miss the eight'; and.

The level of activity on the 'wooden spoon' bet type was consistent with information concerning the gravity of the breach becoming known prior to the Storm informing the NRL of the extent of its breaches at an 11am meeting on April 22.

"The most significant of the bets in terms of timing appear to have been from Melbourne and Brisbane based punters," Murrihy said.

Wires, SMH and News Limited reports have put out there...a punter, alleged to be a league official, stood to win $20,000 from bets placed with online bookmakers from a computer in Brisbane but had ripped up his tickets to avoid detection. However, the bookmaker alleged to have taken the wager said it would be impossible for any punters who had bet online to avoid detection by tearing up their ticket as the Northern Territory Gaming Commission had a record of all transactions. But it seems the identity of the punter who placed the bets totalling $200 in a Melbourne pub will not be known until he or she attempts to collect their $40,000 at the end of the season. Footage taken from CCTV cameras at the hotel did not show the bets being put on.

According to Tabcorp sources, the punter who made the cash bets totalling $200 had a "good knowledge" of the company's procedures. TAB outlets pay out a maximum of $10,000 without requesting photo identification. By placing 5 bets, none of which would return more than the $10,000 limit, the punter may have been trying to avoid handing over his or her identification.

The NRL said Murrihy had spoken to a number of persons who had placed significant bets as well as the integrity departments of betting operators. "The NRL stresses that while people may have gained information from outside of the NRL that led them to speculate on the seriousness of the meeting, the decision to stop Melbourne accruing points in 2010 was not made until the afternoon of April 22, nor were decisions in relation to the club being stripped of both premierships and minor premierships," a media statement issued in the past 48 hours stated.

Internet Addiction Not Linked To Gambling Addiction...

Internet dependence and "problem gambling" are both addictions, but Aussie researchers found no link between excessive Internet use and "problem gambling". Dr. Nicki Dowling of the University of Melbourne and his colleagues did an assessment of a group of uni students down under and determined similar vulnerabilities... attributable to anxiety, stress, depression, loneliness and social isolation...appear to contribute to excesses in Internet use as well as gambling behavior. The researchers conclude excessive Internet use and problem gambling appear to be separate disorders that share common "underlying psychological profiles"! The study was published in the journal Rapid Communication in Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking. Oh, punters and gamers also enjoy Facebook, and of course Gambling911 and Media Man are on Facebook also.

Former Australian Prime Minster John Howard (Not Rudd) Not Welcome On Aussie Cricket Board...

The powers that be have spoken loud and clear.... Former Aussie PM John Howard on the Cricket board? No Thanks.... We don't see Kevin Rudd throwing his hat in the ring either. Here's an update...

The Howard controversy which has engulfed world cricket gained diplomatic status on Friday with the prime ministers of Australia and New Zealand supporting the former Aussie PM, whose bid to become ICC vice-president was rejected by the ICC executive board last Thursday. Howard was asked by present Australian PM Julia Gillard to give it another shot, raising the prospect of a protracted battle on racial lines. Meanwhile, new ICC president Sharad Pawar vehemently denied any racial connotation in Howard's rejection. He also shuddered off suggestions that the development would divide world cricket. The Indian cricket board (BCCI) stood behind him, saying, "It's not a diplomatic row as the media would like us to believe," a top BCCI official told TOI. With the Aussie and New Zealand cricket boards expressing shock and resentment over their candidate's failure, Gillard and Kiwi PM John Key echoed..."John Howard, passionate, passionate cricket fan. I share some of the concerns he's voiced publicly about the kind of factors that are influencing this decision," Gillard said on Friday, with Key..."I'd be very happy to offer full support for John Howard to get this role." Meanwhile, former ICC CEO Malcolm Speed's attack on the sub-continental cricket admin following Howard's inability to secure enough votes to become VP trotted around the cricketing world. Australian Speed, who often feuded with BCCI during his term as ICC CEO, even called Pakistan Cricket Board's chief Ijaz Butt a "buffoon" while also saying that two former presidents of the Bangladesh Cricket Board were jailed after a change of government. Butt didn't react but a PCB spokesperson said: "We will not comment on it as we are in the process of confirming the statement carried in the Australian media."

Australian Politics: Julie Gillard Gets Labor Back In Front!...

PM Julia Gillard has reversed federal Labor's fall in the polls and put her party in an election-winning position, according to recent analysis. Reuters Poll Trend combining recent opinion poll results gives the Gillard govt a two-party preferred vote of 51.6%, compared to the Coalition's 48.4% If repeated on election day, the result would see Labor returned to government, but with a reduced majority. It lends weight to Labor's decision last week to dump then prime minister Kevin Rudd for Julia Gillard. The Rudd government's vote had been falling steadily since March. The combined polling also confirms the new Prime Minister's popularity. It suggests 52.2% of voters prefer Julia Gillard as prime minister compared to 33% for Opposition Leader Tony "The Bruiser" Abbott. There is heightened interest in the polls as Prime Minister Gillard decides when to call a federal election due between August and April, but likely to be held before the end of October. UFC: Dana White Loves Aussie Fans...

"You know over there in Australia, you have real men's men. They're not pussies. Do you even have pussies over there? Guys that go, mmmm, aahhh, I can't go into the outback. They are real men, tough men, who get the sport and like it." Australian fans are expected to bet big on the UFC 115 Lesnar VS Carwin fight, with Lesnar enjoying a slight favorite, is world on the streets and MMA websites and sheets. Aussie Pay TV operator, Foxtel, and its Main Event PPV channel are understood to be getting big numbers, and these are likely to be released within the week following the 115 fight event.

Aussie F1 Ace Mark Webber Fine After Crash...

Mark Webber has played down his 190mph European Grand Prix crash and is fine. Webber is looking forward to continuing on flying the flag for Red Bull Racing. He comments... "Obviously you get a bit concerned when that happens. But fortunately I walked away from it and when you race for as long as us guys do you're going to have the odd big one here and there. I remembered everything". "It certainly takes both of us to have the accident," Webber said. I could have done something different to not hit Heikki as well. Collectively we got involved with each other and certainly it was unnecessary over what was at stake, which was not a great deal. That's the stupid thing about it."

NRL State Of Origin - New South Wales v Queensland - This Wednesday...

NSW selectors have opted for a "something old, something new" approach to Game Three, sacking players, blooding players and recalling players as they battle to stave off an embarrassing 3-0 series nuclear destruction.

Coach info: Craig Bellamy will want to go out with a bang in his final as mentor of NSW. He enters this clash with a terrible 2-6 record for just a 25% return – way down on his 67% winning rate with the Storm. QLD's Mal Meninga now boasts a 71% winning record from his 14 games guiding Queensland.

Queensland remain extremely heavily tipped to win the final clash of the season.

NSW win 2.60
QLD win 1.50

Casino Wars Hit Asia; Not So Friendly, by Greg Tingle - 30th June 2010

Readers er punters, casino billionaires, gaming PR's, journalists, insiders and everyone else... Think casino wars were just limited to the Las Vegas Strip and Australia re Crown Casino VS Star City Casino? Think again. Media Man and Gambling911, along with the trusty Dragon Slayer, take you on a journey of the orient and learn that the casino wars are not quite as friendly as they are down under in Australia...

The latest casino war in the Asia Pacific is happening before our eyes in downtown Singapore.

Enter Marina Bay Sands, worth about $5.5 billion and just enjoyed its grand opening on June 23, is the second most expensive casino property in the world and sports 2,560 hotel rooms spread among three towers. (Folks, its 2nd only to CityCenter in Las Vegas, at about $8.5 billion, cost more to build.)

In the red corner...Resorts World Sentosa, which cost "only" $4.4 billion and opened its casino in February. Resorts World Sentosa has four hotels, including the first designed by Michael Graves already open, with 1,350 rooms combined. Two more hotels with 500 rooms are planned. What will be the occupancy rates %, and will the house still always win?

Things work a bit different in Singapore to that in Vegas or Australia.

Fox example locals have to pay through the nose to enter. Local wives can even apply to have their husbands banned from gambling. Stricter dress regulations also... no shorts in the casino thank you.

Marina Bay Sands’ high-roller corridor has restaurants from Japanese-born Australian sensation Tetsuya Wakuda and two Michelin-crowned chefs: Ferran Adria-hater Santi Santimaria of Spain, and Parisian pastry-lover Guy Savoy.

A Pangaea nightclub, sitting on a floating pavilion on Marina Bay is eye catching. Marina Bay Sands has more of a professional (not that type of pro) feel. Corporates are invited by 1.3 million square feet of meeting/exhibition space.

Resorts World Sentosa is more Party Time, with its Universal Studios theme park, easy beach access and lodging options including a Hard Rock and the family-friendly Festive Hotel, offering rooms that can sleep between 6 and 8 people.

Resorts World Sentosa also sports world class chefs and kitchen. Joel Robuchon, Susur Lee, Australia’s Scott Webster and Japan’s Kunio Tokuoka. The complex has been compared to Foxwoods plus.

Table games are all the rage having about double of Marina Bay Sands.
But this high-stakes tussle is just beginning.

Singapore is well aware of the action in Macau as well as Sydney and Melbourne, enjoying recent million dollar revamps, the Lear Jets et al, and are not going to lie down without a fight. The ultimate catch is "whales", and friendly government regulation along with solid relationships are also strategic keys.

The developments unfold as American casino kings such as Steve Wynn talk of moving more of their operation and overall business to the Orient, not overly impressed with the 'O' administration.

Aussie James Packer however is staying on the very good side of Australia state and federal governments, and by all accounts, Macau and his City Of Dreams looks to be enjoining its dream run, after a period of uncertainly.

Swing back to the U.S and Atlantic City isn't looking too good. The industry says AC has failed to adapt to the times very well, and they haven't been able to plug into internet based opportunities as well as many. Maybe some AC casinos could do with the internet consultancy from the likes of Gambling911 and / or Media Man. Basic websites and being listed on Google Earth isn't delivering the world to them.

This fast paced war isn't over yet, but the chess game is well on the way.

Punters, some Art Of War type quotes for potential use next time you meet a casino billionaire...

"Internet is like electricity" (James Packer)

"Big will not beat small anymore. It will be the fast beating the slow" (Rupert Murdoch).

"In the long history of humankind (and animal kind, too) those who learned to collaborate and improvise most effectively have prevailed" (Charles Darwin)

Hollywood Studios Attempt To Stop Movie Futures Market, by Greg Tingle - 29th June 2010

Entertainment insiders, movers n shakers, and star gazers, Hollywood has caught the gaming and gambling bug, while some factions are pro, some con. The old guard is generally looking to protect their turf. Legal eagles and Hollywood movie moguls have been hitting the phones and using their political clout in attempt see things go their way. Paramount Pictures and Marvel Entertainment may have deals with the likes of PartyGaming, but that doesn't mean they are a lock for Hollywood movie exchanges. Media Man and Gambling911 embed themselves in the action...

Hollywood's old guard movie studios are on the brink of winning their battle against the movie futures markets, with United States legislators likely to outlaw such trades within days.

At last count 6 Hollywood studios are pushing to see movie betting banned and canned (in the bin, not in the can)... in movie speak.

Currently movie futures contracts allow and facilitate speculators to bet on the box office success or failure of a particular film. The first of these new era contracts, for the Matt Dillon and Chris Brown flick Takers, was approved by the United States Federal regulator over a fortnight ago and the new Sylvester Stallone film The Expendables was due to be approved by the regulator. Sly "Rambo" Stallone is quietly fired up say insiders, but the old guard is looking to put ice on his fire. Stallone and mate, Arnie, have had a taste of the Hollywood - gaming connection previously with both the Rambo and The Terminator Hollywood slot games that are offered via PartyGaming, in play for free or play for money options. StudioCanal greenlighted Sly's PartyGaming deal a few years ago. Orion Pictures Corporation was originally behind The Terminator deal. Orion still operates today, but it is now an in-name-only subsidiary of MGM. They acquired Filmways and The Samuel Goldwyn Company, but they do not own Samuel Goldwyn Films. In the past years other entertainment brands such as Marvel Entertainment followed suit into gaming and gambling, usually with good to great success, by CryptoLogic had mixed results, with PartyGaming blitzing them for service, gameplay, credibility, affiliate program offerings and overall stability. Marvel best adapted to the igaming world say analysts.

Movie Slot Games: Movie Betting Next? Legal Eagles Fly...

The powerful Motion Picture Association of America has been lobbying lawmakers to outlaw movie futures, arguing the market would be easily manipulated and skew the public's perception of movies before they open. The association firms believes rival studios could potentially sabotage films by betting against them.

Trading would be based on the amount of money a movie takes in during its opening weekend. The exchange would set the initial odds for contracts, but those odds would change based on the bidding of investors. An investor who buys a contract with longer odds takes on greater risk and the potential to earn more money.

Example?...an "investor" may think a movie will make at least $75 million in its first weekend. The exchange finds an investor who thinks the movie will fall short of that mark and the two investors enter the contract together. When the movie receipts come in the one who is correct gets a % on top of their investment based on the odds received. The other loses their investment! It's put your money where your mouth is maties.

At the weekend, it emerged that a ban on movie futures is in an amendment to President Obama's financial reform Bill, which is likely to be passed by Congress. Two box office futures markets, the well publicized (thanks to The Hollywood Reporter, Gambling911 and Media Man) Trend Exchange and Cantor Exchange, had intended to launch "soon".

Last week, the mastermind or 'Evil Genius' if you will, behind Trend Exchange, Robert Swagger, vowed to launch to market even if the ban was passed and fight the Government in court on the grounds the regulator had already granted approval. But an MPAA spokesman said the ban makes it retrospective to June 1 - before the regulator issued the approval. Legal eagles best or worst nightmare... add it to the legal bill hey.

Academics, Professors And Smart Cookies Weight Into Debate...

Associate professor Barry Burgan, head of the business school at the Australia's University of Adelaide, advised a movie futures market would provide valuable information about which films were likely to succeed (or fail). "Only one out of a large number of films produce returns and if you can provide ways to predict that better you can improve the outcomes," he said. With his odds analysis, little wonder Hollywood old guard are not so keen.

Media Man is currently seeking comment from Marvel Entertainment and New York based media entrepreneur, Mort Zuckerman. Zuckeman has previously pointed to online gaming and gambling as a way for U.S newspapers and mainstream media companies to stop their bleeding, following the adaption to a business model adopting to gaming, be it slots, poker, bingo, sports betting or a combination, following the UK media experience. In the meantime Australian newspapers and media firms, Daily Telegraph, and Fairfax Media (Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, Brisbane Times, WA Today etc) keep ramping up their gaming, igaming and sports betting involvement.

Aussie casino king James Packer remains keen on his Premier Media Group stock. Premier Media Group also enjoys ties to the sports betting world via Fox Sports, and Packer mate Tom Cruise just happens to sometimes stay at Crown Casino and is featured in the PartyGaming title Mission: Impossible. Coincidence Not! Comon' James and Cruise, shake them up in Hollywood... I'm an investor (in Crown) you know. Got to keep the investors happen. Just don't tell us its impossible, and if need be, speak to Richard Branson who just launched Virgin Gaming, following his success of Virgin Casino (not available to Aussies or Yanks yet). PartyGaming is keen to ramp up more Hollywood involved (and do deals with Crown Limited). Last year PartyPoker referred online poker players to the Aussie Millions Poker Championship in Melbourne, Australia, and the promo worked a charm. We all made money right? Yep. Thanks in advance.

FIFA World Cup Attacks: Aussies Recovering Well But City On Alert For More...

South Africa continues to get mixed reports on its security, especially regarding the safety of tourists. The bush tucker bag of Australian fans who were attacked and robbed in their hotel room are recovering well, but South Africa's reputation regarding safety continues to fall, amid crimes often containing "inside job" elements. Media Man can confirm that the crime problems are far bigger than just the atrocious track record of the now infamous Hamilton Parks Country Lodge in Hazyview, located north-east of Johannesburg.

Aussie Mark Webber Close Call At Valencia...

Aussie Formula One title contender Mark Webber had a lucky escape on Sunday after suffering a massive crash at the popular European Grand Prix. The 33-year-old's Red Bull flipped over on lap 10 of the 57-lapper race after hitting the back of Finnish Heikki Kovalainen. Webber appeared to walk away from the wreck of his car unhurt and was taken away in the medical car as a precaution. The Aussie, who has now slipped to 4th in the overall world standings behind British McLaren duo Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button, and his teammate Sebastian Vettel, had started from the front row on the grid behind teammate Vettel. Webber had a terrible start slipping down to 9th then pitted to be near the rear when he crashed out. Vettel won the race in fromt of Hamilton and Button. Hamilton now leads overall standings with 127 points, ahead of world champion Button on 121.
Vettel's 2nd win of the year lifted him to 3rd on 115 points with Webber fourth on 103. Vettel was wrapt to have secured pole position, as it mean the Red Bull team had pole in every race except Canada where Hamilton had been successful. Vettel set a time of one minute 37.587 seconds towards the end of the qualifying session, quick enough to fend off last ditch efforts from Hamilton and Button, and Ferrari drivers Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa. Vettel, 22, was relieved to be starting at the front again after a number of disappointments in Turkey and Canada, but admitted that he was surprised as many had predicted the Valencia track would suit the McLaren and Ferrari cars. "The last couple of races we didn't have a good run on Saturday, so it is good," said Vettel after qualifying. "These circuits, Canada and here in Valencia, usually wouldn't be our strongest so it's good to put the car on pole and our pace looks good. It was a tight qualifying session in the end. In the first run I had a huge moment in the first sector and I knew I had to put everything in the second run, and it worked. I am happy for today. It was a very tough one here, especially as we reintroduced the F-duct and a lot of other things of the car, and some mechanics had just one-hour sleep." Hamilton started behind the Red Bull duo but capitalised by Webber's crash.

Sumo Scandal Claims Oriental Top Brass Scalp...

Japan's sumo association has announced it will go ahead with a tournament next month despite allegations of wrestlers and coaches betting tens of thousands of dollars on baseball in a widening scandal that has tarnished the image of the ancient sport.

The Japan Sumo Association decided in an emergency meeting Monday to hold the tournament, but kept the option of suspending more than a dozen wrestlers - or about one-third of the top division - along with another dozen coaches, according to media reports.

One arrest has already been made in the betting scandal and police are considering more criminal action pending the outcome of an investigation into the accusations, which first appeared in the weekly press and allegedly involve gangster middlemen.

Stablemaster Otake, who allegedly held the deepest involvement with the baseball gambling scheme submitted a letter of resignation to the association. Police have arrested a former wrestler, Mitsutomo Furuichi, 38, who is accused of demanding hush money from Kotomitsuki to cover up the second-ranking champion's alleged involvement in illegal sports gambling. Public opinion has rapidly turned against the sumo establishment as the gambling scandal widened, with sumo officials perceived to have done little to investigate and publicise the problem. The scandal could torpedo next month's grand tournament, which national broadcaster NHK is threatening to abandon. Big-name sponsors have already turned their backs on the tournament. For the first time since World War II, the sumo association has postponed the announcement of a ranking list ahead of the 15-day July tournament because so many wrestlers face expulsion from the event. Stablemaster Otake is expected to resign, possibly any second, after Gambling911 turns up the heat.

Japan: Saipan Casinos Don't Lure Tourist Nor Turn On Casino Whales...

SAIPAN, Northern Mariana Islands — Legalizing casino gambling in Saipan wouldn't necessarily draw more tourists, according to a Japan-based tourism official for the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. Michael Merner, the Marianas Visitors Authority managing director for Japan, said tourists travel to Saipan for its natural beauty, and glitzy casinos wouldn't fit in. "It's important that Saipan not follow the road of Guam or Hawaii with overcommercialized development," said Merner, of Marketing Garden Ltd. Saipan should "keep its position as a natural paradise, and that doesn't fit the casino image," he said.
The Northern Mariana Islands already have casino gaming in Tinian, and Merner said there's no need to expand it to Saipan. In an informal survey of 10 major Japanese travel agents, Merner said the "overwhelming answer" was that Saipan shouldn't create a casino. The U.S. commonwealth "has a great reputation for its natural beauty. Not so much for the quality of the infrastructure. Not so much about the restaurants. Nature is really its selling point," he said. A measure before the commonwealth's legislature would legalize casinos in Saipan and allow them to operate in hotels with at least 250 rooms. Investors would have to pay a $100,000 nonrefundable casino application fee, and additional licensing fees could reach $200,000. Even though most gambling is illegal in Japan, travel agents believe adding gambling to Saipan's attractions wouldn't entice Japanese visitors, Merner said.

Hong Kong Police Crack Football Gambling Ring...

Hong Kong based coppers advised they have smashed a record breaking 170 million Hong Kong dollar (22 million US dollar) gambling ring that took illegal bets on World Cup football games and horse racing. Authorities arrested four men linked to Hong Kong's notorious triad gangs and seized betting records in the latest in a series of raids that have netted at least three dozen suspects since the tournament kicked off this month. "This is a record for a single raid," a police spokeswoman told wire services. Betting records worth about 32 million US dollars have been seized. Police said they have not finished breaking down the value of wagers put on football versus horse racing in the latest raid. In a joint operation earlier this month, mainland Chinese police arrested at 45 odd people and confiscated 44 million Hong Kong dollars' worth of betting slips in nearby Shenzhen. Punters in Hong Kong, a football and horse racing-mad former British colony, can bet legally on a variety of sports events including the World Cup through the Hong Kong Jockey Club. About 35 billion Hong Kong dollars in legal bets were placed on football matches in 2009, according to Jockey Club figures. Illegal bookmakers are said to offer considerable superior odds, and easier credit terms. Failure to repay can bring horrific punishment!

Malaysia Drops New Gambling Plan Amid protests...

KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak advised his government had dropped a proposal to legalise sports betting amid protests by groups who fear it will create more social ills. The uproar over sports betting erupted after Ascot Sports, a company controlled by influential tycoon Vincent Tan, said in May it had been granted a licence to offer odds for the hugely popular English Premier League season. The government denied such a licence had been issued and said that it was still reviewing its decision as Muslim groups, opposition leaders and even members of the ruling government coalition opposed the new licence. "I hereby wish to announce that the government has decided that the licence will not be issued," Najib told state media late Friday. "Although there were groups who supported as well those who did not support or opposed the decision, it was clear to the government that a majority of the people did not agree that the licence be issued to Ascot Sports," he added. Opposition political parties said Thursday they were planning a mass street protest next month against the proposal. "We have too many social problems - drug addiction, free sex and baby dumping," Kamarulzaman Mohamad, youth secretary of the conservative Pan-Malaysia Islamic Party (PAS). "Sports betting will add to our problems as most youths watch football. They will be influenced to borrow money," he added. Party officials have not yet to decided whether the demonstration will be cancelled following Najib's announcement. Malaysia bans its majority Muslims from gambling but allows betting at a casino operated by Genting Group, on the national lottery and on horse-racing. Berjaya, the property-to-gaming group which has a 70 percent state in Ascot Sports, has said the illegal sports betting market in Malaysia was worth as much as 20 billion ringgit (six billion US dollars) a year.

Crown Limited King James Packer Delighted With Photon Group Deal...

Photon's capital raising will be close to $200 million, which could almost double its market capitalisation of $191 million, advised insiders including the in the know News Limited blood hounds. Photon stock was suspended on June 4 at $1.02 a share and the coming capital raising will be at a substantial discount, with the rights issue price less than 50 cents a share. UBS and Macquarie are handling the equity raising which has already won the backing of major shareholders Reg Grundy, James Packer and others. Mr Packer continues his roll of good fortune and is once again ramping up media and new media interests. Media Man continues to become more investor ready, looking to plug into the Packer - Gyngell - Bondi Beach "machine". Gyngell has recently joined the Crown Limited board of directors to mixed media reports, but some close to the action say Packer and Gyng have a "few tricks up their sleeve". The point to the entertainment and lifestyle sector (not just gambling). In a business where trust is important the Packer - Gyng team is an excellent piece of risk management, in a (media) business known for backstabbing and jealously.

Australian Politics: PM Julie Gillard Puts Kevin Rudd On The Backbench But 'Minster Of Censorship' Stephen Conroy Retains Communications Portfolio!...

Sen Stephen Conroy has somehow survived a cabinet reshuffle from newly crowned Prime Minister Julia Gillard, retaining his role as the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy. Maybe Steve's being listening to Aussie casino king, James Packer! Gillard revealed details of her new ministry at a lunchtime press conference (28th June) noting that "limited changes". If you were Kevin Rudd it wasn't very "limited". Gillard claims "maximum stability in the team" has been achieved. Trade Minister Simon Crean was to take over Gillard's role as Minister for Education, Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations and Minister for Social Inclusion. Crean's Trade portfolio has been merged with Foreign Affairs and will now come under the responsibility of incumbent Foreign Affairs Minister Stephen Smith. Finance Minister Lindsay Tanner, who last week announced his intention to resign from politics, was asked to continue in his role for the remainder of Labor's term in Government. Gillard advised she had no intention to make any further changes to her ministry until after the re-election, should the Labor Government survive..."The premium I have put in making these ministerial changes is on stability. There will be no further appointments to cabinet; there will be no new ministerial appointments; there will be no new parlimentary secretary appointments. The team is the team. Our focus is on election day. We take nothing for granted. If the government is re-elected, then following the re-election, I will shape the team at that point." A role had not been created for deposed Prime Minister Kevin Rudd in the current Gillard ministry. However, she said he would be offered a senior minister position should the Labor Government be re-elected. "I have, in recent days, had conversations with Kevin Rudd about his future," Gillard advised press. "It's his intention to seek re-election as the member of Griffith; consequently, I have told him I would be absolutely delighted to see him serve as a senior cabinet minister in the team if the Government is re-elected." Conroy has exuded confidence in the lead-up to the reshuffle, boasting to SBS Television he had been watching the World Cup rather than jostling for position. Good to hear Steve, we love our sports also.

Aussie Pokie Palace Robbery And Attacks Continues; Another Armed Robbery!...

3 bandits carrying weapons including a machete ordered pokie players onto the floor of a gaming venue in Melbourne's north before stealing a large quantity of cash. Patrons and staff inside the club were told to lay on the floor while the robbers grabbed large amount of cash and left on foot. South Africa is not regarded as a safe place, with or without the FIFA World Cup Unfortunately a bush tucker bag of Australia fans experienced the very real danger just hours ago, assaulted and robbed at gunpoint. Media Man and. Media Man and Gambling911 kick off into the field of danger in South Africa...

A bush tucker swag of Aussie soccer fans in South Africa, including an off-duty fed, were robbed, tied up and assaulted at gunpoint soon after after enjoying watching the Socceroos take up Serbia.

It's understood four mad Australian fans and a London based duo returned to their digs after watching the match at approximately midnight on Thursday, when they were assaulted by four armed men, clues pointing to local knowledge and an "inside job".

The Aussies were attacked as the lodge manager was showing them to their rooms at the now infamous Hamilton Parks Country Lodge in Hazyview, an isolated area north-east of Johannesburg. The lodge has dozens of crime incidents to its name, and South African police have not been following up fully or appropriately, according to dozens of media reports. Media Man and Gambling911 is helping ensure that the word gets out on the track record of guests being robbed and worse at 'Hamilton Parks' (mark it down in your Stay Away From List'!)

Wires is reporting that the mum of the lodge manager, Nola Molich, said the gun wielding bandits had hidden around the corner as her 'sonny jim' proceeded to welcome the Australian tourists into their quarters.

"The guys came up to him with a gun and said, 'Right, get back in.' He went in and they locked the door behind him and asked for all their goodies."

The South African police probing the crime, Captain Jacky Mbuyane, advised the victims' hands were bound behind their backs with shoestrings, while the crims stole mobile phones, laptops, passports, money, and pride (what may be left), of their controversial and crime ridden nation.

He also advised the female was sexually assaulted, and got medical treatment, but she was not raped. "Emotionally, she was hurt. She was upset.".

Mrs Molich advised the incident was "very traumatic", but the well-dressed thieves were "as my son said, the best kind of people to be robbed by. They did not even tie them up tightly, and they were not interested in hurting anybody."

The swag of Aussies freed themselves soon after the attack and called the coppers. Australian consular personnel from the Australian High Commission, based in Pretoria, assisted the victims get medical attention and gave them emergency travel documents, a Department of Foreign Affairs spokesman said.

The Australian fans said they intended to stay on to try to end the sports tour on a high note. Media Man applauds their positive attitude and guts.

Yankees, sorry to hear about your 2-1 loss with Ghana in last nights match. At least it wasn't a whitewash, and the American team says they had gone further than they has expected.

Superior products help take top prize at the first eGaming Review b2b Supplier Awards in London

LAS VEGAS, June 23, 2010 - WagerWorks, the online and mobile subsidiary of International Game Technology, was officially crowned "Slot Provider of the Year" at the inaugural EGR b2b Supplier Awards in London. With high expectations following a strong preceding year of successful game releases and new partnerships, the prize confirmed WagerWorks' status as a leading provider of highly innovative gaming content. With more than ten years of experience in the online gaming market, WagerWorks is the leading provider of online, mobile and iDTV game content. WagerWorks was also a finalist in the "RNG Casino Supplier" and "Mobile Supplier" of the year categories.

"The honor of having WagerWorks crowned 'Slot Provider of the Year' is a true reflection of the game expertise we have as part of IGT. Among a myriad of suppliers, WagerWorks is the only one with deep roots in the traditional land-based casino business of IGT, and with that credibility comes a wealth of knowledge and experience," said Oliver Lofthouse, director and general manager at WagerWorks. "Our games are continuing to perform at the highest level with more and more clients seeing the benefit of partnering with the best content supplier in the market."

The award was a perfect conclusion to a positive month for WagerWorks which has seen UK operator Sportech expand its current games portfolio with additional WagerWorks titles on its Game On, Football Pools and Vernons brands.

Additionally, the first expansion into the UK land-based amusement sector with ThePalaces.com highlighted the versatility and appeal of WagerWorks games to all areas of the gaming industry.

"We are thrilled to be given this prestigious honor," said Gideon Bierer, executive vice president new media at IGT. "This is a testament to the hard work and collaboration of our teams. Together, we are able to provide the top online gaming experience in jurisdictions where this type of gaming is available."

The start of June also saw the online release of the hit IGT multi-line slot, Noah's Ark(R), with immediate industry plaudits and player reaction making it WagerWorks' online game of the year to date. Widely acclaimed for the quality of its audio and visual appeal, Noah's Ark(R) provides a true menagerie of entertainment with an iconic super-rich Split Symbols(TM) feature which counts for two symbols rather than one.

To celebrate the new game, PartyCasino.com has also introduced two leaderboards where over $150,000 is up for grabs.

A PartyCasino.com spokesman said: “Featuring raging rhinos, sleek springboks and ferocious lions across five-reels and 30-paylines, we’re sure you’ll find Safari Soccer a real winner. Over $150,000 is available through two leaderboards – one for regular players and one for Palladium Lounge VIP members. Fight for your lion’s share today!”

“We were going to introduce the sounds of the vuvuzela horn at a late stage but decided the sound would already be way too familiar to customers. You could call it a last minute technical change!”

Safari Soccer is a slot very much in the mold of the classic Melon Madness and features a free-spin bonus game triggered by the zebra referee symbol. A customer has to pick one of the referees in view to discover the number of free spins and a valuable multiplier.

The leaderboard races are underway and run until 23.59ET on the 27th June. Palladium Lounge VIPs compete for more than $95,000. First prize is $15,000 and pays 150 places. The regular race features a top prize of $5,000 and pays 500 places. To encourage top-class performances PartyCasino.com will be rewarding double points to customers who play Safari Soccer. Please note that the extra points awarded will not count towards the Safari Soccer Cup leaderboards.
